Our Curriculum



We follow the Ruth Miskin "Read, Write Inc." phonics scheme across the school. RWI is a method of learning centred round the recognition and use of letter sounds and patterns - we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.


In Early Years Foundation Stage children learn skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development, as set out in the EYFS Framework.

These are:

* Communication and language

* Physical development

* Personal, social and emotional development

* Literacy

* Mathematics

* Understanding the World

* Expressive Arts and Design

The curriculum is designed to be flexible so that staff can follow your child's unique needs and interest when planning activities. Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.

Key Stage One


We teach English in line with the National Curriculum (2014). We believe that teaching the English language is an essential role in our school.

Our English lessons consist of 4 key areas:

* Spoken language

* Reading

* Writing

* Spelling, Grammar and punctuation

Our overarching aim for English at Thorpe Acre Infants, is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

We follow a scheme of work based on materials from the Lancashire Grid for Learning and "Progression in writing" document from the "Talk for Writing" website.



At Thorpe Acre Infants we use the new National Curriculum for Mathematics (2014) as the basis of our mathematics programme alongside the White Rose Maths Hub schemes of work and a calculation policy written by a group of Leicestershire Maths SLEs. The key aims of the curriculum are to ensure that children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, they reason mathematically and can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.

Our Mathematics curriculum reflects a greated emphasis on mastery of the key skills of mathematics to ensure children have adequate time to develop their fluency and understanding before moving onto a new concept.

Our Maths lessons cover these 4 strands:

* Number-including calculation

* Measurement

* Geometry

* Statistics (Year 2 Only)


Science and Topic

We follow the 2014 National Curriculum objectives for our topic teaching. We teach to a particular theme each half term which is based on our children's interests. Each half term begins with an "impact day" providing a memorable experience for our children and providing a "hook" for learning. The themes run on a 3 year cycle and each theme has a different major focus either Art, D and T, Geography or History. Science is taught in every topic each half term.
