Spotlight learning

This week 12/10/26 - 16/10/26:-

Year 1

In Maths, Year 1 have been looking at addition fact families. They have been starting to learn about number bonds to 10 and how helpful these are to us!

In History the children put their knowledge to the test. We have been remembering everything we have learnt this half-term and have been comparing it what's the same and what's different in their childhoods. 

In Science they finished off their learning about our five senses with a detailed look at how we can use our sight carefully. We played a memory game where they really had to look at what they could see, and then they looked at the different parts of the eye.

05/10/26 - 09/10/26:-

Year 1

The children in Year 1 have been looking at “part- whole” models in Maths this week, and discovering how these can help them with adding two numbers together.

In History they have been looking at what school was like in the 1950's and 1960's. We had a look at some pictures of Thorpe Acre Infant School and noticed how children used to wear their underwear and vests for PE!

In Music the children have been working in small groups to create performances of our chant while playing to the pulse of the music.

In Science they conducted an investigation using their sense of taste. They tasted different flavoured crisps and looked at their results as a group to see if everyone liked or disliked the same flavours.

28/09/26 - 02/10/26: -

Year 1

In Maths, the children in Year 1 have been learning how to use the more than, less than and equals symbols.

In History the children’s grandparents came in and talked to the classes about their childhood’s and how things were different in the past. .

In Science the children enjoyed using just their sense of smell to work out what a product was eg mint, vinegar.

21/09/26 - 25/09/26:-

Year 1

English - The children have started to use Talk for Writing to come up with actions to retell the Gingerbread Man story. This will help us in our Big writes next week.

Maths: The children have been learning about 1 more and 1 less with lots of different resources. They have been exploring “more than”, “less than” and “the same” symbols. They have made their own symbol with lollipop sticks to practice with

History: In preparation for your grandparents visit the children have been coming up with questions they would like to ask our visitors. If you have any grandparents or parents who were born in the 1950s/1960s, we would really love you attend next Thursday 1st October at 1:15pm. Please let the office or Miss Hassan know if you can make it!

Art: the children have been drawing shells with felt tips and exploring different effects by dripping water on top

14/09/26 - 18/09/26:-

Year 1

English: The children have been doing drama – acting out the story of The Gingerbread Man and hot-seating the characters. The week culminated in preparing and baking delicious gingerbread men!

Maths: Year 1 have been counting on from a particular number and drawing chalk number lines.

Art: Observational drawings of shells.

07/09/26 - 11/09/26: -

Year 1

English: The children have created their story maps of 'Little Red Riding Hood'. They are really good at retelling the story using their actions. Please ask them to retell the story!

Maths:  Year 1 have been counting out 10 objects from a larger group. We have also started to recognise numerals as words. It has been a little tricky but we are learning some tricks to help us remember what each word says. 

History: The children had great fun exploring toys from the past. We had detailed discussions about the similarities and differences between the toys we have today and toys from the past. One thing we noticed was the materials used, toys back then were mostly made out of wood whereas a lot of our toys are made from plastic.

01/09/26 - 04/09/26: - 

Year 1

What an amazing start to Year One for our Thorpe Acre Infants. We have already enjoyed lots of activities to help our teachers to get to know us.

In English we have been learning about traditional tales, starting with Little Red Riding Hood.  We have been writing labels, lists and captions. 

In Maths we have started our mastery maths lessons, learning how to work well with our partners. We have been counting objects to 10 and sorting objects into groups. 

In Art we have enjoyed drawing spirals in different ways, and in History we have been comparing new and old houses.
