Week Ending 31st October 2025
In Year 1 this week the children have been continuing their mathematical learning on addition. They have been using part whole models, numberlines, rekenreks and tens frames to help us add two numbers together.
The children have learnt what Geography is and made some actions up to help us remember that it is 'the connection between people and places'. They looked at some photographs to work out what the connection was.
In Music, they have been learning some new songs to practise how to use their voices in different ways. They watched a video of 'Naughty' from the musical Matilda to see how you can use your face to help your singing sound and look better.
In Science, the children explored “What Autumn looks like in our school.” They talked about the changes that happen during autumn, such as how the weather gets colder, how nature changes, and what animals do at this time of year. The children revisited the word 'hibernation' and learnt a new word, 'migration', which means that some animals travel to warmer places to find food and shelter. The children also went outside to observe the trees and leaves. They enjoyed talking about how and why so many leaves fall to the ground in autumn.
Week Ending 17th October 2025
In Maths, Year 1 have been looking at addition fact families. They have been starting to learn about number bonds to 10 and how helpful these are to us!
In History the children looked at some videos from a school in the 1950s and compared it to our school. They were shocked to see that the girls and boys had separate playgrounds and they had to bring a penny for their milk each day!
In Science they finished off their learning about our five senses with a detailed look at how we can use our sight carefully. We played a memory game where they really had to look at what they could see, and then they looked at the different parts of the eye.
Week Ending 10th October 2025
The children in Year 1 have been looking at “partwhole” models in Maths this week, and discovering how these can help them with adding two numbers together.
In History they have been looking at what school was like in the 1950's and 1960's.
We had a look at some pictures of Thorpe Acre Infant School and noticed how children used to wear their underwear and vests for PE!
In Music the children have been working in small groups to create performances of our chant while playing to the pulse of the music.
In Science they conducted an investigation using their sense of taste. They tasted different flavoured crisps and looked at their results as a group to see if everyone liked or disliked the same flavours.
Week Ending 3rd October 2025
In Maths, the children in Year 1 have been learning how to use the more than, less than and equals symbols.
In History the children’s grandparents came in and talked to the classes about their childhood’s and how things were different in the past. .
In Science the children enjoyed using just their sense of smell to work out what a product was eg mint, vinegar.
Week Ending 26th September 2025
Maths: The children have been learning about 1 more and 1 less with lots of different resources. They have been exploring “more than”, “less than” and “the same” symbols. They have made their own symbol with lollipop sticks to practice with
History: Relatives born in the 1950s and 1960s visited and the children enjoyed asking them questions and finding out about the past.
Art: the children have been drawing shells with felt tips and exploring different effects by dripping water on top
Week Ending 19th September 2025
In English, the children have been using the Gingerbread Man story, and have used a story map to come up with actions to retell the whole story. Why not ask them what they can remember?
In our Maths lessons this week, the children have been counting backwards from numbers between 10 - children enjoyed making paper rockets and using them to count backwards.
In art, the children have been doing observational drawings of shells.
Week Ending 12th September 2025
In English, the children have been practising retelling the story of Little Red Riding Hood. They have enjoyed creating their own story maps to help them!
In Maths in Year 1, they have been counting on from a particular number and drawing chalk number lines to aid their understanding.
For History, the children had great fun exploring objects that might have been in their grandparents’ homes (and some staff!) A telephone with a dial sparked huge interest – and the fact that you can’t move too far when using it!

Week Ending 5th September 2025
What an amazing start to Year One for our Thorpe Acre Infants. We have already enjoyed lots of activities to help our teachers to get to know us. In English we have been learning about traditional tales, starting with Little Red Riding Hood. We have been writing labels, lists and captions. In Maths we have started our mastery maths lessons, learning how to work well with our partners. We have been counting objects to 10 and sorting objects into groups. In Art we have enjoyed drawing spirals in different ways, and in History we have been comparing new and old houses.
