Welcome to our Year R, Squirrel Class page
Class Teacher: Miss R Kerry
Support Staff: Miss D Mitchell
PE Days: Monday and Wednesday
In Squirrel class we are just beginning our exciting journey through Thorpe Acre Infant School. In our class we work hard on developing our understanding of ourselves and our feelings, making friendships, communicating effectively with others and learning rules and routines.
Please click on the link below for all the information on what we are learning about this half-term.
This week (24th March 2025 - 28th March 2025)
Year R
In Year R in Literacy the children have loved using a story map and actions to learn and retell the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. Lots of children then chose to draw their own story maps in their independent learning time!
In Maths this week, we have been investigating numbers to 20. We have been using Numicon pieces to represent the teen numbers, thinking about the '10 and some more' pattern.
(17th March 2025 - 21st March 2025)
Year R
This week, Year R have read a non-fiction text called 'See How They Grow: Farm'. The children have learnt about the type of animals that are usually found in farms. We also learnt the names of 'mothers and their young'. Some of the key vocabulary learnt this week includes.
Duck - Duckling
Pig - Piglet
Horse - Foal
Cow - Calf
Hen - Chick
Sheep - Lamb
In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of both 3D shape and on our number bond knowledge. The children have worked extremely hard on their number bonds to 10. We have used the stem sentences " __ and __ are a bond to 10" and " ___ plus ____ equals 10". Please ask your child to share their number bond knowledge with you.
(10th March 2025 - 14th March 2025)
Literacy: We have continued our learning of 'The Little Red Hen'. The children participated in a wheat grinding workshop and have also read and wrote simple instructions on how to make bread. We then made our own bread and got to eat it!
Maths: We have been learning the names and some properties of 3D shapes, including: cube, cuboid, cone, sphere, square-based pyramid and cylinder.
(3rd March 2025 - 7th March 2025)
Year R
This week in Year R, in Literacy we have been learning to retell the story of 'The Little Red Hen' through 'Talk for Writing'. We have used a story map and actions to tell the story out loud. Please ask your children about this and then they can show you what we have learnt!
Maths: We have been learning about special pairs of numbers that add together to make 10. For example, 5+5, 6+4, 7+3. This understanding is really important for future Maths learning!
(24th February 2025 - 28th February 2025)
Year R
In literacy we have read the story 'Town Mouse, Country Mouse'. The children have learnt the difference between a town and the countryside. "A town has lots of houses, buildings, shops and cars. A countryside has lots of fields, farms and farm animals". We made our own representations of a town and countryside.
In Maths, we have started to learn about different combinations that make 10 (number bonds).
The children had an aboriginal art workshop. The children worked extremely hard to create their own aboriginal art. The adults were impressed with the level of detail and effort that the children put in. Here is some of the work the children have created!
