Year R: Squirrel Class
Welcome to our Year R, Squirrel Class page
Class Teacher: Miss R Kerry
Support Staff: Miss D Mitchell
PE Days: Monday and Wednesday
In Squirrel class we are just beginning our exciting journey through Thorpe Acre Infant School. In our class we work hard on developing our understanding of ourselves and our feelings, making friendships, communicating effectively with others and learning rules and routines.
Please click on the link below for all the information on what we are learning about this half-term.
This week (10th February 2025 - 14th February 2025)
Year R
In literacy the children have learnt about Valentine's day and what people do to celebrate it. We have practiced giving compliments to each other.
We also compared hot and cold environments.
In maths we have been finding and representing 9 and 10. "When the 10 frame is full it means there is 10. There is 1 empty space on the 10 frame, that means it is 9."
(3rd February 2025 - 7th February 2025)
In Literacy we have read the story 'We're Going on a Lion Hunt'. The children have enjoyed looking at some of the animals that we might find in Africa and thought of lots of similarities and differences between this story and one of our favourites from earlier in the year: 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'.
In Maths we have been increasing our knowledge on length and height. We have learnt how to measure length by using cubes.
(27th January 2025 - 31st January 2025)
Year R
In Literacy we have learnt about how people celebrate Chinese New Year. The children learnt about the 'Great Race', they tested different materials such as wood, plastic, and paper, to see which material they can use to build a raft for the animals in the story.
We have also learnt about the Christian creation story. We went to explore the outdoor area and looked for God's creations and manmade creations.
In Maths, we have continued to develop our number knowledge to 8. We have looked at odd and even numbers to 8 and doubling amounts to 8.
(20th January 2025 - 24th January 2025)
Year R
Maths: We have been embedding our learning around the numbers 6, 7 and 8. We have been looking at different representations of the numbers and using these to help us think about how they are made. For example: 3 plus 3 equals 6, but so does 4 plus 2.
Literacy: The children were very excited to see a video of our classroom where it had been covered in snow! There were lots of ideas about how it happened! Throughout the week, we have been learning about what it might be like to live in a cold place e.g. what clothes we might need to wear and what animals we might see.
(13th January 2025 - 17th January 2025)
Year R
In Literacy, the children have continued to learn about Space. The children formulated their own questions, then we used a non-fiction text to find the answers. We used our knowledge on Space to create our own non-fiction book.
In Maths, they have been learning about the numbers 6, 7 and 8. We looked at how they can be represented in different ways. We also found '1 more' and '1 less' than 6, 7 and 8.
(6th January 2025 - 10th January 2025)
Year R
Literacy - The children have loved learning about space! They have learnt names of the planets, including Earth, and have thought about their order in relation to the distance from the sun.
Maths - They have been exploring mass and capacity. The children have used cubes and a set of balance scales to work out how heavy an object is.
